In Antique town, a 10-hectare bamboo plantation will be established.

Antique SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA. To help green the environment, mitigate climate change, and provide a livelihood to village residents, a 10-hectare Communal Bamboo Plantation will be established in Barangay Alvaiz in Patnongon, Antique.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), Antique provincial government, Antique Sand and Gravel Quarry Permittees’ Association, Incorporated (ASGOPAI), and Alvaiz Upland Farmer’s Association (AUFA) signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) on Wednesday for the planting of bamboo as part of the National Greening Program (NGP).

The establishment of the Communal Bamboo Plantation on 10-hectare timberland, according to DENR Regional Executive Director Livino B. Duran, can support the province’s socio-economic advancement by allowing the 72 members of the AUFA to earn a living by planting and managing the plantation.

“This also supports the NGP’s goal of accelerating the restoration and replanting of unproductive, depleted, and degraded lands,” Duran noted.

The establishment of the bamboo plantation has been included in the preservation of forests and areas along riverbanks under DENR Administrative Order 2017-03, which was issued on February 15, 2017.

The bamboo plantation, according to MGB Regional Director Raul Laput, will not only green the land but also assist offset the consequences of climate change.

Bamboo absorbs greenhouse gases while also releasing more oxygen into the air. It can also survive in adverse or damaged environments.

Laput continued. Because the project calls for the planting of 2,346 rooted bamboo cuttings in December, ASGOPAI, which falls under their sector, will give funding of PHP455,976 for the bamboo plantation, including seedlings and labor.

Antique Governor Rhodora Cadiao praised ASGOPAI for devising a scheme that will benefit other Antiquenos, notably members of the AUFA, by providing a source of income.

“I understand we have to start from zero,” she remarked, “but we may look forward to this initiative bringing economic progress to our people.”

The province government will then provide technical help as well as monitor and assess the project through the Environment and Natural Resources Office led by Vivian Marfil and the DENR.
