The leaders of Russia and Finland met on Saturday to discuss Helsinki’s accession to NATO and its potential impact on bilateral relations.

President Vladimir Putin spoke with his Finnish colleague Sauli Niinisto over the phone, according to a Kremlin statement, and emphasized that adopting Helsinki’s historic policy of military neutrality would be inappropriate because there were no threats to Finland’s security.

Putin stated that Finland’s accession to NATO might have a negative impact on their mutually beneficial relations, which he claims have been created over time in the spirit of good neighborliness and partnership.

Putin informed Niinisto that Kyiv had ceased peace discussions and showed no interest in “a meaningful and constructive dialogue,” according to the statement.

After the start of the Russia-Ukraine war on Feb. 24, Finland and Sweden, who had followed a policy of neutrality and non-alignment for decades, changed their minds.

According to UN estimates, at least 3,573 people have died and 3,816 have been injured in the battle. The true cost is expected to be significantly greater.

According to the UN refugee agency, about 6.1 million people have fled to neighboring countries, with 7.7 million people internally displaced.
