This year, the PNP reports a significant decrease in poll-related occurrences.

MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported on Monday that the number of election-related incidents has dropped dramatically, with only 20 genuine cases recorded from January 9 to May 15.

With 166 verified election-related events in 2010 and 133 in 2016, according to PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo, the statistics are significantly lower than in 2010.

“Kung titingnan natin at hihimayin natin ‘yung statistics natin, especially dun sa validated, wala dun halos ‘yung ating pinangangambahan na mangyayaring kaguluhan dyan sa Mindanao, and this can also be attributed dun sa mahaba at naging magandang paghahanda ng (NTF-ELCAC).

She noted that election-related incidents registered in the 2010 and 2016 election seasons were largely harassment, a permit-to-campaign scam, and communist terrorist organizations’ unlawful operations.

“Since na-address na po’yan sa pamamagitan ng mga programa ng NTF-ELCAC, ay malaki po talaga ang ibinaba,” Fajardo remarked.

She stated four of the 20 instances occurred in Region 1 (Ilocos), five in Region 3 (Central Luzon), six in Region 9 (Zamboanga Peninsula), one in Region 10 (Northern Mindanao), and four in Region 4 (Cordillera).

Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police reminded the public that the firearms ban is still in effect until June 8.

As of Monday, 3,273 persons had been arrested for breaking the election firearms prohibition.

The PNP claimed in a statement that 3,167 people were captured, including 61 security guards, 23 police officers, and 22 military members.

A total of 3,068 police operations yielded 2,535 firearms, 15,789 rounds of ammunition, and 1,185 deadly weapons, according to the report.

According to the PNP’s newest data, the National Capital Region has the most apprehended violators (1,171), followed by Calabarzon (354), Central Visayas (338), and Central Luzon (303), and Western Visayas (303). (195).

Violators face a sentence of not less than one year but not more than six years in jail, with no possibility of parole.

They also risk being barred from holding public office, losing their right to vote, and having their firearms licenses revoked or permanently suspended.
