The Reds’ poll-related extortion attempt was thwarted thanks to frank discussions with executives.
MANILA – During the last election season, better communication and partnership between field units of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and local leaders effectively curtailed attempts by the New People’s Army (NPA) terrorists to carry out extortion activities.
In a virtual press conference held Monday by the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC), AFP spokesman Army Col. Ramon Zagala praised local leaders for their understanding of the issues and recognition that the NPA’s dwindling resources mean the insurgency problem will eventually be resolved.
“I believe we now have better communication. We can clearly explain to our field units, sa atin mga (on our) candidates, ating mga (on our) political leaders, that they are now our partners in defeating insurgency and improving the lives of our countrymen affected by insurgency, “Zagala explained. “With these communication(s), the NPA’s ability to collect permit-to-win and permit-to-campaign (extortion schemes) was severely reduced.”
Because the NPA has lost public support, Zagala claims that these communist terrorists are unable to travel freely and carry out extortion tactics like permit-to-win and permit-to-campaign scams.
“We think in the Armed Forces that constant contact and engagement with our local chief executives is one of our main successes,” he said, explaining why the NPA is unable to collect.
He credited the “success” to security forces and the NTF-continuous ELCAC’s efforts to combat insurgency by decreasing or eliminating residual NPA strongholds.
There were no reports of lawmakers or local government unit officials paying permits-to-campaign fees or providing any kind of aid to terrorist groups in this year’s elections, according to Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Ao.
The United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines have designated the CPP-NPA as a terrorist organization.
The National Democratic Front was officially legally labeled as a terrorist organization by the Anti-Terrorism Council on June 23, 2021, identifying it as “an integral and inseparable part” of the CPP-NPA, which was founded in April 1973.
