DENR suspends three ‘non-operational’ mining companies’ MPSAs.
MANILA, Philippines โ On Wednesday, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) formally ordered the suspension of three large-scale firms’ Mineral Production Sharing Agreements (MPSAs) for allegedly intruding on the Masungi Georeserve in Rizal.
DENR interim Secretary Jim Sampulna said in a virtual press conference that three distinct contracts with Rapid City Realty and Development Corp., Quimson Limestone, Inc., and Quarry Rock Group, Inc. have been suspended.
Despite complaints of invasion, Sampulna noted that these businesses have been dormant since 2004.
“They opted to voluntarily suspend operations due to the various emergent difficulties highlighted in the newspapers, people who are allegedly complaining,” he stated in Filipino.
Separate warnings state, among other things, that claims against their MPSAs are “invalid from the start” and “do not have prior rights.”
“I am halting the operations of those three MPSAs and revoking the companies’ authority to function in order to put a stop to public speculation,” he said.
An MPSA is a sort of mineral agreement in which the state offers a contractor the right to mine over a certain region in exchange for a percentage of the contractor’s production.
Meanwhile, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has announced that it will examine another alleged illegal quarrying incident in the Upper Marikina River Basin Protected Landscape.
Despite the bans, Mines and Geosciences Bureau Director Wilfredo G. Moncano remarked, “If there are any ongoing illegal quarrying operations, we will order an investigation.”
