CITY OF ILOILO – The French government is assisting Guimaras in developing a geographic indication (GI) for its sweet mango goods in order to export them to European Union markets (EU).

“The French government is assisting the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) and applicants such as us in terms of technical assistance so that we might obtain a regional indication.” When we have that, it will be easier for our Philippine products, such as Guimaras mangoes, to join the European market,” Elena V. Quezon, the Guimaras Provincial Economic Development Officer, said in an interview on Monday.

She added the IPO is polishing the criteria for issuing of the GI permission with the cooperation of the French government, the EU, and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Quezon also stated that a delegate from the French government is awaiting Guimaras’ proposal on the scope of technical help required.

The Guimaras Mango Producers on Marketing Cooperative, which manages the collective mark stickers for their mango products, is likely to benefit from the technical help.

Guimaras mango growers were granted a collective mark, which is akin to a trademark, in 2017.

According to Quezon, the GI is a type of branding that is associated with a specific location, such as Guimaras mangoes.

It is proof that the product meets the target market’s required standard while also adhering to good agricultural practices during the manufacturing process.

“If we have a geographic indicator, we police our own products,” Quezon added.

She stated that once the EU market is realized, they must ensure that at least half of their present 27,000 fruit trees give fruit on a yearly basis.

“We definitely need to keep building new fields because the road widening and irrigation projects have destroyed most of our fruit trees,” she remarked.
