MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) has stated that it will support proposals in the 19th Congress that will boost the country’s internet access.

The Open Access in Data Transmission Act, the Rural Wired Development Act, the Satellite Liberalization Act, and the Spectrum Management Act, according to PCCI, will push for better internet services.

PCCI has teamed up with Better Internet PH to promote the Philippine Internet Agenda in the upcoming administration.

The Philippine Internet Agenda intends to increase internet access, make internet services more dependable and inexpensive, and secure the digital infrastructure.

“We have been lagging behind our Asean neighbors in terms of better internet for a long time, and we should prioritize legislation that would improve our overall connectivity,” said PCCI president George Barcelon.

He went on to say that bettering the country’s digital connectivity will attract more foreign direct investment and have an impact on the government, economy, tourism, and education, among other sectors.

Grace Mirandilla-Santos, Lead ICT Policy Analyst at Better Internet PH, also advocates for a reassessment of the requirement for a congressional franchise for prospective internet service providers (ISPs), noting that the Philippines is the only country in the world that requires one.

“We want to alter policies so that ISPs can deploy digital infrastructure more easily.” “Because technology will eventually trump legislation, our policies must be future-proof,” Mirandilla-Santos added.
