Only a few private schools in Dumaguete have in-person graduation ceremonies.

DUMAGUETE CITY — An official said on Monday that private schools are now authorized to have limited in-person graduation rituals, but public schools are still awaiting rules from the Department of Education (DepEd).

Some private schools recently staged face-to-face graduation rites, according to DepEd-Dumaguete division superintendent Dr. Gregorio Cyrus Elejorde.

“Some private schools finished their school year this month because they started early last year and were allowed in-person graduation ceremonies subject to the limitations of the IATF (Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emergency Diseases) and Department of Health protocols,” he said in a mix of English and Cebuano.

He claimed that they alerted the Department of Education about their particular graduation plans.

“That’s why we’re looking into the procedures they’re putting in place,” he added, adding that it’s all in line with IATF laws and regulations.

The number of graduates and attendees, as well as the imposition of fundamental health procedures, are all factors to consider, according to him.

Public elementary and secondary schools, on the other hand, are scheduled to finish sessions by June 20 or later, depending on their school calendars, he said.

“We’re still waiting for official rules from the central office to see if they’ll allow public schools to have limited in-person graduation and moving-up ceremonies,” he said.

Elejorde explained that their graduation preparations are predicated on Alert Level 2 limitations, as Negros Oriental is still under quarantine because to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Elejorde, meanwhile, reminded schools of the Department of Education’s aim of keeping graduation rites “simple.”

“This will also ensure that no one is left behind,” he explained, noting that “not all learners and their families have the financial means to attend costly graduation ceremonies.”
