Negros Occidental is taking steps to combat the ‘alarming’ dengue fever outbreak.
BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – As of the third week of May, the Provincial Health Office (PHO) of Negros Occidental is taking steps to address a 282 percent spike in local dengue cases.
On Tuesday, Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson described the statistics as “alarming,” but added that the increase is part of a three-year cycle of an increase in the number of cases of the mosquito-borne disease.
“Our PHO is aware of the situation and is taking corrective action, including urging folks to keep our surroundings clean,” he said.
According to the latest data from the Department of Health-Western Visayas (DOH-6Morbidity )’s Week No. 20 updates, Negros Occidental continues to have the highest number of newly reported cases in the region, with 96.
In comparison to the instances documented for the same period last year, new cases increased by 282 percent during the week of May 15 to 21 this year.
Negros Occidental had a total of 657 instances from January 1 to May 21, 2022, including five deaths.
According to Lacson, Dr. Ernell Tumimbang, the provincial health officer, revealed to him that dengue fever cases spike every three years, with the most recent spike occurring in 2019.
“The instructions haven’t changed,” says the narrator.
Make sure your surroundings are clean.
“Don’t let stagnant water sit in your yard,” he said.
As of the third week of May, dengue cases in this capital city had climbed by 72.5 percent.
According to data from the City Health Office (CHO), 138 cases have been registered since January 1, with four fatalities, up from 80 cases and two deaths in the same period in 2021.
Dr. Grace Tan, chief of the CHO Environment Sanitation Division, had stated that the campaign to battle dengue fever will be sustained by urging barangays to perform the increased “4S.”
“4S” stands for “Search and eliminate” mosquito breeding sites, “Secure self-protection measures” such as wearing long pants and long-sleeved shirts and using mosquito repellent on a daily basis, “Seek early consultation,” and “Support fogging/spraying.”
