Food security will be a top priority for the Marcos government.

MANILA, Philippines — President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s new administration will make every effort to maintain food security in the Philippines, Press Secretary-designate Beatrix Rose “Trixie” Cruz-Angeles said on Saturday.

This comes after the World Bank, the World Trade Organization, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, and the World Food Programme has issued warnings about a worldwide food crisis hitting poor and emerging nations.

Angeles-Cruz informed the public in a statement that the Marcos administration is prepared to stabilize the food supply and increase production.

“Gaya nang nasabi ni President-elect Marcos, mangangailangan’yan ng agarang tugon, at dapat agaran ding simulan ang pangmatagalang mga solusyon,” Cruz-Angeles added.

The current coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine crisis, climate change, and rising oil prices are all factors contributing to global food insecurity, according to Cruz-Angeles.

She believes that other nations facing a coming food shortage may be forced to follow the steps used to address the situation during the global food crisis of 2007-2008, including food export restrictions.

She agreed that taking similar steps in the Philippines would be difficult.

“May mga bansang mapipilitang magsuspinde ng export ng kanilang produkto upang matiyak ang sarili nilang suplay ng pagkain at agapan ang pagtaas ng domestic prices sa gitna ng pagsipa ng world prices,” Cruz-Angeles stated.

Outgoing Agriculture Secretary William Dar warned in May that the country could face a potential food crisis in the second half of 2022 due to a rise in the prices of domestic food, both locally produced and imported, as a result of multiple global economic issues.

The Department of Agriculture announced on Thursday that the country is finally feeling the effects of the food crisis, as food prices continue to rise.

Marcos had previously stated that he would devise a strategy to ensure food security and stabilize agricultural commodity prices.
