Southeast Asia might be Marcos’ first formal overseas destination: envoy
According to a senior official, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. may visit Singapore or Indonesia in Southeast Asia on his first official trip abroad.
The United States, China, and the European Union, among other Philippine allies, have invited Marcos to come, according to Jose Manuel Romualdez, ambassador of the Philippines to the United States.
He stated during the Kapihan sa Manila Bay conference that the president is actually aiming to go to the Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) region initially.
He continued, “The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is advising that he go to Indonesia and, of course, President Marcos has been invited to Singapore so he may go to those nations first.
There have been numerous high-level contacts in a variety of domains, such as maritime security and counterterrorism, that have shaped relations between Indonesia and the Philippines.
They also set the stage for the delineation of their continental shelf boundary in the Celebes Sea, a proclaimed priority for both nations, at the beginning of this month.
The DFA claims that the delineation of the maritime boundaries between the two greatest archipelagic states in the world is an important state practice in delimitation and advances international law, notably the law of the sea.
Romualdez added that Marcos had shown a desire to become more involved in Asean matters and that he was eager to play a “big role” in bringing the 10-member bloc together.
‘In fact, I can tell you that he’s had conversations with (Singapore) Prime Minister Lee (Hsien Loong) even before his inauguration, and they both agree that Asean will be going to be the forum or institution that strengthens our area of the world and be prepared to talk to China, the US, and the EU about how we can conduct ourselves in the Indo-Pacific region,’ he said.
