According to a statement from Malacanang on Friday, it will be up to Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla to provide President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. with his proposal to broaden the purview of the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG).

The request was made by Secretary Remulla, so we’ll have to wait for him to bring it up, said the press secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles during a briefing at the palace.

This came after Remulla asked for the PCGG’s jurisdiction to be expanded.

Remulla suggested on Thursday that the PCGG’s duties be extended beyond recouping the alleged illicit wealth of the Marcoses and their allies.

The plan from the justice chief aims to cover the seizure of smuggled cargo and the forfeiture of assets for failing to pay taxes, trafficking in illegal drugs, bribery and corruption, and other offences.

To recoup the alleged illicit fortune of the Marcoses and their allies, the PCGG was established in 1986. 171 billion PHP have been recovered thus far.

When asked if the Marcos administration would implement Remulla’s recommendation, Cruz-Angeles responded, “Right now, there is no policy.”

Some people are worried that Remulla’s anticipated expansion may weaken the PCGG’s mandate.

Cruz-Angeles responded when prompted: “We don’t comment to speculation.”
