DA proposes a strategy to bring in 150,000 MT of sugar.
According to Malacanang, the Department of Agriculture (DA) is formulating a proposal to import 150,000 metric tons (MT) of sugar after major soda industry participants revealed that they are experiencing a scarcity of refined sugar.
In her absence from a press briefing at the Palace, press secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles remarked, “Yes, kino-confirm natin yun, ang (we confirm the) recommended number, 150,000 metric tons.
Cruz-Angeles cited President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. when he claimed that the planned quantity would enhance the supply of sugar used in food production and safeguard jobs.
‘Yun po ang pangangailangan ng mga industrials na tinatawag ng ating Pangulo suggested na quantity for imports. The planned quantity for importation is as follows: Sila po ang gumagamit in huge commercial quantities ng asukal. They are the ones who use sugar in significant quantities for commercial purposes, and some jobs rely on their continuous production, she stated.
Marcos revealed in his weekly video blog on Sunday that if the country’s supply runs out by October, the government may import 150,000 MT of sugar, which is half the amount first suggested by the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA).
Marcos serves as both the DA secretary and the SRA chairman.
Following the signing of an “unauthorized” resolution to import 300,000 MT of sugar, he claimed the SRA would go through a “reorganization.”
The SRA resolution to import 300,000 MT of sugar was previously rejected by Marcos. Leocadio Sebastian, a former DA Undersecretary, signed it in his place.
On Wednesday, the President declared that he would turn the probe into the order’s improper signing up to Congress.
Cruz-Angeles stated that notwithstanding the President’s statement, the Palace investigation into the improper signing of the resolution will still go through.
Marcos recently met with sugar dealers to impose a recommended retail price of PHP70 per kilogram for sugar in light of the fact that certain establishments in Metro Manila have raised their pricing to as much as PHP100 per kilogram.
They initially offered at PHP80, so I said I would settle for PHP70. I asked whether I may ask for PHP70 because the price was already high. Help the people (since they are in need), and we will succeed, he remarked.
