Plans for housing, energy, and food security were discussed during a Cabinet meeting.
On Thursday, the ideas to secure food security, advance the energy industry, and enhance the national government’s housing program were addressed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his Cabinet.
According to press secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles, the Departments of Agriculture (DA), Energy (DOE), and Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) presented their ideas during the Cabinet meeting that Marcos called at Malacanang Palace in Manila on Thursday morning.
Cruz-Angeles noted that more information would be released “at the convenience of the departments involved” as the ideas were still being refined.
“Hindi naman po kami nagri-release ng mga detalye na ito kasi po ay pagkakataon para i-discuss ‘yung mga ideas na ito. As a result, there may be adjustments and refinements (We are unable to provide the specifics because the plans were just considered this morning. There will therefore be changes and improvements),” she stated.
Cruz-Angeles stated that the DA, which is currently led by Marcos, put up plans to increase the nation’s food output.
The President promised to modernize Philippine agriculture by relying on science and technology in his first State of the Nation Address, which was given on July 25.
The DA wants to make quick changes to the value-chain structure of the nation in order to solve urgent issues, including growing agricultural commodities and farm input prices.
Said Cruz-Angeles During the Cabinet meeting, Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla spoke about the need for “adequate, accessible, and affordable energy.”
On August 9, Lotilla stated that the nation’s energy sector regulatory framework is being hammered out to give investors with clear policies.
Cruz-Angeles said in a Facebook post that the DOE is working with its affiliated organizations to increase investor interest in the energy sector.
“It is my sincere belief that Pangulong Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has made numerous investments in the energy sector. (President Bongbong Marcos Jr. wants additional investments in the energy sector.) Bilang pagsunod dito, inihahanda na ng Department of Energy Philippines at mga mambabatas ang pagpapatupad ng mga polisiya upang maparami pa ang mga investor. In keeping with this, lawmakers and the Department of Energy Philippines are getting ready to put regulations into place that will attract additional investors),” the speaker said.
Cruz-Angeles added that during the Cabinet meeting, the planned Pambansang Pabahay para sa Pilipino program of the DHSUD was also discussed.
The DHSUD announced its strategy to deal with the over six million unit housing backlog during a meeting with the Senate Committee on Urban Development, Housing, and Resettlement on Wednesday.
The widening housing deficit in the nation is a concern, according to DHSUD Secretary Jose Rizalino Acuzar, and the department’s key projects will help families living in dangerous areas and in informal settlements.
The DHSUD now estimates that there are more than 6.5 million unoccupied housing units.
Agribusiness logistics problems
Marcos emphasized the necessity to address the logistics issue in the agricultural sector during the Cabinet meeting in order to reduce the cost of food in the nation.
He made the statement in response to complaints about the movement of agricultural products, particularly those of forwarders and cargo handlers regarding local government units’ (LGUs’) policies and the proliferation of checkpoints.
“We can no longer afford to do that. We are failing to meet the logistical hurdle, as stated by Marcos, as cited by the Presidential News Desk (PND).
The revival of express lanes for food trucks, a measure that was initially implemented during pandemic-induced lockdowns, was something that Local Government Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. stated he would discuss with Philippine National Police (PNP) chief General Rodolfo Azurin Jr. and Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual during the meeting.
Express lanes, according to Abalos, would allow for “free-flowing” cargo flows.
The use of technology to identify locations with good harvests and enable the government to ship their produce to regions with a shortage of food was another suggestion made during the Cabinet discussion.
For instance, with the assistance of the DILG (Department of the Interior and Local Government), agricultural products will be monitored along the road to spot bottlenecks and raise potential problems with the relevant LGU.
