On Tuesday, the Department of Agriculture in Central Luzon (DA-3) distributed sentinel piglets to an additional 26 swine farmers affected by African swine fever (ASF) in this province.

In accordance with the Integrated National Swine Production Initiatives for Recovery and Expansion (INSPIRE) of the DA’s National Livestock Program, each pork producer in San Simon received three sentinel pigs.

Agripina Tuazon, Agriculturist II for the DA’s Livestock Program, stated on Wednesday that 34 additional swine farmers in San Simon would receive sentinel pigs in the coming days.

“Ito ay naglalayong maiangat muli ang sector ng pagbababoy at matulungang makapagsimula ang mga magbababoy na naapektuhan ng ASF (This aims to reinvigorate the hog sector and to help start the hog raisers affected by ASF),” Tuazon said in a social media post.

On August 4, 315 sentinel piglets were distributed to ASF-affected swine farmers in the municipalities of Apalit, Minalin, and Macabebe.

In addition, the DA supplied the piglets with disinfectants, antibiotics, and vitamins.

The distribution of sentinel piglets, according to Tuazon, is geared toward swine repopulation.

She stated, however, that the repopulation of swine is only permissible if the sentinel pigs can survive and mature without any trace of the ASF virus, as determined by blood sample analysis and close monitoring.

“The sentinel pigs will be closely monitored for more than a month; if the animal demonstrates good health, a region can be declared ASF-free,” she explained.

Tuazon reminded backyard pig farmers not to feed their pigs’ swill, which is the primary cause of the spread of African swine fever, and to strictly adhere to biosecurity protocols.
