Modernizing the fishing industry is intended to ensure food security.
According to Malacanang, the government’s strategy to guarantee national food security includes a plan to modernize the fisheries industry.
This came after the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) committed to prioritizing raising domestic fish production in order to fully develop the nation’s fisheries sector.
The BFAR’s activities, according to press secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles, are in accordance with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who also leads the DA, to secure a sufficient food supply.
In accordance with President Bongbong Marcos’ policies to ensure food security, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Central Office has laid out plans to increase local fish production and reduce fish imports.
BFAR, according to Cruz-Angeles, will concentrate on the modernization and innovation of the fishery sector.
She spoke to several of BFAR’s programs and remarked, “The bureau presented its goals to strengthen current projects.”
In a statement released on Thursday, BFAR outlined its catch-up plan, which includes the modernization, intensification, and innovation of the fishing industry.
The steps BFAR would conduct are intended to solve the estimated 44,000 metric tons annual deficiency of the nation’s food fish supply.
According to BFAR, “this is more than 1% short of what is needed to establish complete sufficiency.”
The bureau stated its intention to push for the modernization of irrigation supply canals, provide pond aeration to fish farms, build a cold chain program in island towns, and increase the usage of fish aggregating devices in critical fishing sites across the nation.
The National Fish Broodstock Development Program was also upgraded by BFAR by integrating more high-value species such as siganids, snappers, pompano, groupers, and seabass.
The establishment of additional hatcheries for increased fingerling production, the expansion of the Balik Sigla sa Ilog at Lawa (BASIL) program, the enhancement of mariculture parks, the promotion of urban aquaculture and unconventional production methods, and the improvement of aquaculture through the use of green energy are also included in the bureau’s catch-up plan.
The catch-up plan will be put into action by BFAR in the second semester of 2022.
