Palace “respects” Face mask rule is being relaxed by the mayor of Cebu City
Malacanang respects Mayor Michael Rama of Cebu City’s decision to relax the city’s rule for wearing a face mask when battling the Covid-19 virus.
Rama has power over his own city as the mayor of the city, according to Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles at a press conference at the palace.
Cruz-Angeles stated that she too will hold off on commenting until President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
“We recognize local governments’ authority over their own areas of responsibility. As of right now, the President hasn’t responded to this, she said.
She mentioned that the Department of Health (DOH) might also make a statement soon.
“We will issue such a statement if this is brought up. There won’t be a statement yet without all of that information arriving, she continued, because we are also awaiting the DOH’s response to this issue.
Face mask use is now optional across the city thanks to an executive order (EO) Rama signed on Wednesday, with the exception of hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare facilities.
According to the EO, those who are immunocompromised, ill, or showing signs of the flu must still wear face masks outside but should stay at home if possible.
Rama listed a number of factors for loosening the face mask requirement, including the city’s high vaccination rate, which is 110 percent of the desired level.
The Cebu provincial government ordered the removal of the requirement for face masks in well-ventilated, open areas earlier this year.
However, members of the national task team criticized the contentious policy.
Gwendolyn Garcia, the governor of Cebu, received a warning that if she disobeyed the national government’s order to wear a face mask, she risked being arrested.
The Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases resolution requiring the use of face masks remains in effect as of this writing.
The DOH has frequently urged people to follow basic public health precautions including donning face masks, cleaning their hands, avoiding close contact, and getting immunized and receiving booster injections.
