The governor of Negros Occidental, Eugenio Jose Lacson, has made face masks optional to wear in outdoor areas throughout the province as an ongoing prevention and control strategy to stop the coronavirus disease from spreading in 2019. (Covid-19).

Executive Order (EO) 22-45, signed by Lacson on September 9 and made public on Sunday, said that “the use of face masks in outdoor and open areas shall be optional for all persons within the territory of Negros Occidental.”

According to the EO, wearing a face mask inside as well as at hospitals and other medical facilities is still required.

In accordance with current laws and regulations, suitable administrative and/or criminal sanctions may be applied for failure to comply with the provisions of EO 22-45 and the established government health and safety protocols.

Negros Occidental still has 168 Covid-19 cases open as of September 10.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is still reviewing the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases’ suggestion regarding the voluntary usage of face masks outside.

According to the Department of Health (DOH) Officer-in-Charge Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire, the plan only applies to low-risk situations and low-risk persons.

Voluntary use will be carried out in stages to assure the population’s protection against COVID-19.

The DOH would still have the “primary say” on the future of the face mask policy, according to press secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles, but Vergeire demands that face masks be used because they offer 70 to 80 percent protection against Covid-19.
