According to Solon, POGOs “cause more harm than benefit.”
The Senate is debating whether to stop or continue Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO), although right now, it can only consider negative repercussions.
According to Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, illegal laborers are abundant, abduction cases occasionally involve Filipinos even though they often involve foreigners, and recent POGO revenues were only PHP3 billion, well short of the predicted PHP40 billion yearly income.
Gatchalian stated that it is uncertain whether POGOs will be banned in a radio broadcast on Sunday.
“Gusto ko makita economic advantages, so pag-aralan natin. Gusto natin na ang isang bansa na maayos, ligtas at mapayapa, but hindi natin maabot ang peace and order kung kabit ng POGO ang organized crime. We must research it because, lalong lalala (I want to see economic benefits. We desire a calm, safe, and orderly nation, but we cannot have peace and order while organized crime is there. Just the opposite will happen),” Gatchalian said.
Nevertheless, he praised the Department of Justice (DOJ) for taking prompt action, which included meeting with Chinese embassy representatives on Thursday to develop a strategy for the return of overstaying POGO employees to China.
If China refuses to allow its nationals back, Gatchalian fears a “humanitarian calamity.”
At the DOJ’s main office in Manila, Zhou Zhiyong, the Chinese Embassy’s Chargรฉ D’affaires Ad Interim, met with DOJ Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla.
They talked about the potential timetable for the return.
