Cholera and acute gastroenteritis cases are increasing in Iloilo City.

The City Health Office announced on Monday that the number of confirmed cholera cases had increased to 30, with seven new cases. In comparison, the number of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) patients had reached 713, adding 12 more cases on September 25.

The acting CHO health officer, Dr. Annabelle Tang, stated in a press conference on Monday that “of the seven (cholera) cases, two were from Mandurriao, three from Arevalo, and two from Molo.”

On September 14, the Department of Health (DOH) collected 14 samples from water wells in areas where cases were present. These samples were then sent to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM), where eight tested positive for cholera, bringing the total number of wells with the disease to nine.

“We will condemn wells after this press conference. Unfortunately, despite our chlorination, it continues, possibly because we have already hit our water table and because they are so close to septic tanks and canals. Contaminants are constantly present, even if we chlorinate,” Tang stated.

Of the city’s 713 instances of acute gastroenteritis, 652 have recovered, while 13 have passed away.

Cholera is one of the diseases that must be reported under AGE, according to a separate interview with Dr. Marie Jocelyn Te, Medical Officer IV of the Department of Health’s Western Visayas Center for Health Development.

She also said that cholera causes mild abdominal discomfort and can quickly progress to moderate to severe dehydration if not treated soon.

In the meantime, Tang announced that the DOH would carry out bacteriological testing on Tuesday for the eight new cases’ water sources and in other barangays with a high frequency of acute gastroenteritis.

Seven thousand eight hundred ninety-two of the city’s 16,528 water wells have been chlorinated, 8,506 have not yet undergone inspection, and 130 have already been declared unsafe.

In the same press conference, Mayor Jerry P. Treas expressed his gratitude for early AGE diagnoses because they allowed rapid treatment and reduced deaths.

He said that he would meet with representatives of Metro Pacific Iloilo Water, one of the city’s water distribution companies, and push them to speed up their construction efforts because the city needs functional water pipelines.

Treas emphasized that “we need to take action.”
