The leaders of NATO and the EU gathered on Monday to discuss the Ukraine conflict and prepare for a new military cooperation agreement.

Jens Stoltenberg, the secretary-general of NATO, and Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, met in Brussels.

At their meeting, von der Leyen and Stoltenberg “addressed Russia’s war of aggression and increasing support for Ukraine,” the two men wrote on Twitter.

They emphasized that while collaboration between NATO and the EU “contributes to security and stability,” the “time has come to agree to a new Joint Declaration to move our partnership forward.”

After the latest NATO-EU Joint Declaration, it has become imperative to reevaluate relations between the two organizations in light of Russia’s conflict in Ukraine and the EU’s current desire to improve its defensive capabilities.

The agreement, signed in 2018, focused on cooperation in counterterrorism, military mobility, and enhancing resilience to dangers associated with chemicals, biological, radiological, and nuclear weapons.
