Two ballistic missiles are fired into the East Sea by North Korea.
The military of South Korea reported that North Korea launched two short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea on Saturday, marking the country’s fourth such provocation in less than a week.
The missiles were launched from Pyongyang’s Sunan neighborhood between 6:45 and 7:03 in the morning, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), and they traveled 350 kilometers at apogees of 30 km and at top speeds of Mach 6.
The launches took place just hours before South Korea was scheduled to host an event celebrating Armed Forces Day and displaying its most important military equipment.
The South, the United States, and Japan conducted an anti-submarine warfare exercise in the East Sea the day before.
The JCS delivered a text message to the media stating, “The latest series of North Korea’s ballistic missiles is an act of severe provocation that undermines peace not only on the Korean Peninsula but also in the worldwide community and a blatant contravention of UN Security Council resolutions.”
The statement said, “our military will maintain a robust readiness posture while tracking and monitoring such movements in close conjunction with the US in preparation against further provocations.”
Gen. Paul LaCamera, commander of the South Korea-US Combined Forces Command, and Gen. Kim Seung-kyum, chairman of the JCS, held virtual talks over the launches.
The North’s action “highlights the destabilizing consequences of the DPRK’s illicit WMD and ballistic missile programs,” according to a statement from the US Indo-Pacific Command.
It underlined Washington’s “ironclad” dedication to defending its partners in Northeast Asia.
Following earlier provocations on Sunday, Wednesday, and Thursday, the most recent launches were made.
US Vice President Kamala Harris traveled to South Korea on Thursday for a full day, meeting with President Yoon Suk-yeol and touring the DMZ that separates the two Koreas.
She stated that while she was here, Washington would “do everything” to uphold its commitment to the Asian ally’s security.
