Agriculture stakeholders have asked to conserve the Sierra Madre mountain range as the “protector” of the environment in response to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s declaration that combating climate change is at the top of his agenda.

They stated that the mountain range served as a barrier from Super Typhoon Karding’s (international name Noru) predicted onslaught, reducing the damage to crops and animals and saving 17 million brood stock in Central Luzon.

The largest protected area in the Philippines, Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park (NSMNP), protects the northern range of the Sierra Madre Mountains in eastern Luzon. The park, which has a total size of 359,486 hectares, made up of 287,861 hectares of land and 71,652 hectares of shoreline water, is situated in the eastern portion of the province of Isabela in the Cagayan Valley.

According to the Department of Agriculture reports, Karding caused PHP2.02 billion in agricultural losses and damage, affecting over 150,700 hectares of farmland and more than 91,900 farmers and fisherfolk.

“While we appreciate the government’s decision to provide fishers and farmers in Karding with PHP709 million in aid, the same amount of assistance should also be provided to our environment, from ridge to reef. In his statement at the 2022 multi-stakeholder forum, President Marcos underlined the significance of exploiting and growing the nation’s natural richness and resources. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) organized the event.

He claimed that only if everyone is committed and determined to “guide our activities and systems towards a greener direction” will the fight against climate change be effective.
