Marcos and the PhilSA work on the PH space program.
Tuesday’s meeting with the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) to discuss the country’s space program was presided over by President Ferdinand R. Marcos.
According to a picture posted on Marcos’ official Facebook page, Joel Joseph Marciano Jr., director general of the PhilSA, provided the president with a summary of the organization’s mission and the space program.
In a different Facebook post, the government-run Radio Television Malacanang (RTVM) stated that the meeting between Marcos and PhilSA representatives took place in the State Dining Room of the Malacanang Palace.
Along with Marciano, other attendees included Department of National Defense Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Senior Undersecretary Jose Faustino Jr. and Science and Technology Secretary Renato Solidum Jr.
Malacanang has not yet released more information on the meeting.
The Philippine Space Act (RA) 11363, which established PhilSA, handles all matters and initiatives about space science and technology (S&T) applications.
The national space program will be planned, developed, and promoted by this attached agency of the Office of the President (OP), which is responsible for serving as the Executive Branch’s primary policy, planning, coordinating, implementing, and administrative entity by the Philippine Space Policy.
As the country’s space agency, PhilSA is charged with preserving Philippine sovereignty, territorial integrity, and interests. It is also responsible for ensuring access to space and its surroundings.
The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) is also mandated to develop a unified and cogent strategy for space development and utilization, ensure the Philippines’ official representation in the international space community, and uphold the various United Nations-promulgated international space treaties and principles.
PhilSA is requesting about PHP756.325 million to support its operations through 2023.
The Multispectral Unit for Land Assessment (MULA) project, the nation’s satellite development project, is slated for launch in 2025, and PhilSA plans to allocate around PHP828 million for its development in 2023.
Additionally, PhilSA is negotiating a capital investment that would be used to construct satellite testing facilities with the Bases Conversion and Development Authority and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation.
