IMEG and HPG intensify their campaign against the use of seized automobiles in PNP camps
In order to crack down on the use of seized motorbikes and cars as evidence in criminal cases, two units of the Philippine National Police (PNP) joined forces.
Brig. Gen. Warren de Leon, the head of the Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group (IMEG), said in a statement on Friday that beginning January 27, lockdowns have been carried out at different police camps as part of the effort by his office and the Highway Patrol Group (HPG).
“We have inspected a total of 2,213 motor vehicles and motorbikes in different camps in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao from January 27 to December 31, 2023,” De Leon added.
36 people received citation citations for having their vehicles examined in total, 16 of whom were PNP employees.
The remaining infringers who were detained were civilians and representatives of other government organizations who were in the camp.
He added that according to the outcome of the action, PNP employees had violated a variety of laws, the most serious of which were expired registration, plates without numbers affixed, and makeshift plates.
As part of the PNP’s efforts to step up its internal cleansing program, De Leon said, “We are conducting this series of camp lockdowns with the intention of apprehending dishonest PNP personnel using unregistered, recovered, impounded, and carnapped or stolen motor vehicles and motorcycles and instilling discipline within our ranks.”
According to De Leon, the goal of the measure is to demonstrate that the PNP will not allow any employees to engage in this criminal conduct.
He said that while administrative charges were being prepared against active police, civil violators were being handed traffic citations by HPG staff.
