Spanish airports will stop accepting beverages and remove laptops in 2024.

In 2024, visitors at Spanish airports won’t need to place their drinks and electronic devices in security trays thanks to the installation of new 3D scanners at security checkpoints, according to AENA, a public company that manages the nation’s major airports.

The 3D X-ray scanners, which are outfitted with modern technology to thoroughly examine the contents of the luggage, will be used that year, according to AENA.

The new scanners will first be placed at Madrid Barajas and Barcelona El Prat airports, which together handle 40% of all passenger traffic in Spain. By the end of 2024, they will also be in place at Palma de Mallorca and other airports.

This year, AENA will put out a tender for the procurement of 3D X-ray scanners.

Between 2018 and 2028, the business will spend โ‚ฌ1.17 billion ($1.25 billion) on updating baggage control and security systems.
