Albert del Rosario, a former secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), passed unexpectedly on April 18 while traveling to the US. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has sent his condolences to his family.

He made the comment in a statement on Tuesday. “I join the entire nation in mourning the passing of former Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario, an honorable diplomat, and an esteemed public servant,” he added.

He continued, “I express my sincere condolences to Secretary del Rosario’s family and loved ones, who was known for his patriotism and integrity.

The chief executive commended the former top diplomat for the Philippines for his “deep commitment to our national interest and his unwavering devotion to our shared values”.

The DFA announced through a text message that the Philippine Embassy in San Francisco “will extend the necessary assistance to the family of former SFA Secretary del Rosario, including the shipment of his remains back to the Philippines.”

A significant contributor to Manila’s victory in the West Philippine Sea arbitration, Del Rosario led the independent research organization Stratbase Albert del Rosario Institute after leaving the DFA in 2016 and until his passing. He was a strong supporter of the rule of law in the area. He was 83.

Consumer diplomat

Rep. leaders praised del Rosario, referring to him as a “consummate diplomat” and “champion of Philippine sovereignty.”

Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez issued a statement in which he offered his sympathies for del Rosario’s departure and said the country mourns the loss of the former top diplomat.

He declared, “Our country has just lost a consummate diplomat, a modest and diligent public servant and civilian, and a staunch and passionate defender of national sovereignty.” In this extremely trying time, “our thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones, friends, associates, colleagues in government, and most especially to his family.”

Del Rosario was praised for his courageous defense of Philippine sovereignty and the rights of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) by Deputy Speaker Ralph Recto.

“When he was the Republic’s top diplomat, there was no better advocate of Philippine interests, no braver defender of our OFWs, and no bolder champion of our sovereignty than him,” the lawmaker from Batangas’ 6th district stated.

He had polished manners and was articulate in speech. He expressed our stance persuasively but respectfully, whether it was to work with governments or oppose their actions, winning respect from other countries and the admiration of his peers, he continued.

Rep. Manuel Jose Dalipe, the House Majority Leader and representative for Zamboanga City’s 2nd District, likewise sent his sincere sympathies to the del Rosario family in a separate message.

“I have known Secretary del Rosario as a true defender of our democracy and sovereignty, having been one of the driving forces behind our effort to have the UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) recognize our rights to the West Philippine Sea. Although I have always appreciated Secretary del Rosario for being a genuine statesman and a true Filipino patriot, notwithstanding our differences on many national issues, Dalipe stated.
