In an effort to increase the inoculation of people, health officials in Negros Oriental are preparing to initiate house-to-house and campus-based vaccination against coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

In a virtual press conference late Monday afternoon, Assistant Province Health Officer Dr. Liland Estacion said they are awaiting final approval from Silliman University, which coordinated with the provincial government for on-site vaccination of students. She did not, however, provide a definite start date for the house-to-house effort.

She, on the other hand, stated that “house-to-house immunization is the responsibility of the local government units (LGUs)” because they are the ones who are better acquainted with their constituents.

However, Estacion stated that upon request from LGUs, the provincial mobile vaccination team is also available for house-to-house immunization.

“We are willing to train those who are willing to do this because it is one way to speed up the process, and the more people who are vaccinated, the sooner we can achieve our target population,” she added in a combination of English and Cebuano.

Although just 3,000 to 5,000 individuals get vaccinated each day in Negros Oriental, she claims that many people are still opposed to vaccination for a variety of reasons.

“The Department of Health (DOH) has set a goal of 25,000 vaccinees every day,” Estacion explained.

On Monday night, she said, a meeting with the Department of Interior and Local Government will be held to brief LGUs on their respective immunization targets.

Meanwhile, Estacion, the Covid-19 incident commander of the province’s Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID), stated the increase of cases in Negros Oriental has slowed.

As the country prepares for the holiday season, she hopes this trend will continue.
