Diplomatic efforts to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula have been pushed forward.

On Monday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for diplomatic negotiations between the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and all parties involved in the Korean Peninsula’s disarmament.

On Monday, the DPRK is said to have launched two short-range projectiles into eastern waters, the fourth launch in less than two weeks.

“I don’t think there have been that many occasions in recent time where we have witnessed so many launches from the DPRK,” said Guterres’ spokesperson Stephane Dujarric. “And for us, it’s just another reminder of the need of the DPRK and all parties involved getting involved, getting involved in diplomatic talks so we can accomplish what the UN wants, which is a highly verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and, in the short term, a lowering of tensions.”

When asked if Guterres should contact Pyongyang, the spokesman advised using current channels.

“Existing systems and lines of communication, I believe, are in place. And I believe that these should be utilized at this time, and the secretary-general is a strong supporter of the existing diplomatic structures. However, they must be put to use “According to Dujarric.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea reported Monday that the South Korean military had detected two projectiles launched from the DPRK’s Sunan airfield in Pyongyang, which was thought to be short-range ballistic missiles.

On Friday, the DPRK’s railway-borne missile brigade test-fired two tactical guided missiles, according to the Korean Central News Agency.

Pyongyang claimed to have successfully tested a hypersonic missile on January 5 and another of the same type on January 11.
