Velasco: Baybayin’revival’ to aid in PH resurgence

Lord Allan Velasco, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, stated on Tuesday that encouraging and maintaining indigenous and traditional writing systems would boost the country’s comeback.

Velasco made the remarks as he applauded the bill’s third reading approval, which aims to promote, conserve, and preserve Baybayin and other indigenous and traditional writing systems in the Philippines as cultural treasures.

On final reading, the House of Representatives approved House Bill 10657, also known as the proposed “Philippine Indigenous and Traditional Writing Systems Act.” “with 197 votes in favor.

“Lost but not forgotten,” Velasco stated in a statement, “Baybayin, along with other indigenous and traditional writing scripts, should be conserved and promoted as part of the country’s revival.”

Baybayin, he explained, is an ancient syllabary script that means “to spell.” “It is one of at least 16 different writing systems employed by early Filipinos before to the Spanish era, according to.

“It is past time for our country to explore its past through one of its cultural relics, our indigenous and traditional writing systems, especially the pre-colonial Baybayin writing system,” Velasco stated.

He claims that Baybayin and other indigenous writing scripts are symbols of Filipino culture and identity.

“Indigenous and traditional systems in the Philippines must be promoted, protected, preserved, and conserved as means for cultural development, instilling national pride, and conserving Filipino cultural history and identity,” Velasco added.

He went on to say that promoting and preserving these writing systems is critical in order to “increase awareness of indigenous and traditional scripts and create a greater understanding of their significance and beauty.”

The bill would mandate the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to integrate writing systems in relevant areas of basic and higher education curricula, as well as develop a higher education elective or specialized course.

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts will be the policymaking body in charge of promoting indigenous and traditional writing systems in the Philippines.

The bill also aims to promote and conserve indigenous and traditional writing systems by organizing and sponsoring activities that raise awareness of these writing systems, especially during Buwan ng Wika and comparable events.

Seminars, conferences, conventions, and symposia might be held to promote and maintain these writing systems, as well as good record-keeping of essential documents and the preservation of oral testimony on these writing systems.
