Last Saturday, the United Kingdom reported more than 10,000 new Omicron coronavirus variant cases, bringing the total number of new variation-related deaths to seven.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed another 10,059 cases of the new strain, bringing the total number of cases recorded to 24,968.

According to official numbers issued Saturday, the country recorded 90,418 coronavirus cases in the most recent 24-hour period, the second time cases have above 90,000, increasing the overall number of coronavirus cases in the country to 11,279,428.

A total of 125 people died as a result of the coronavirus in the country. There have been 147,173 coronavirus-related deaths in the United Kingdom, with 7,611 COVID-19 victims still in hospitals.

The new data were released after London mayor Sadiq Khan declared a “major crisis” in the city after a “massive rise” in Covid-19 infections spurred by the fast-spreading Omicron coronavirus subtype.

A significant crisis allows multiple government departments to work more closely together and coordinate their efforts, but it also serves as a warning that emergency services and hospitals may be unable to provide their usual level of service owing to unforeseen circumstances.

Khan added that over 26,000 new cases had been recorded in London in the last 24 hours, the highest number since the coronavirus pandemic began.

Meanwhile, according to leaked minutes from a meeting of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies obtained by the BBC, hospital admissions in England could reach “at least” 3,000 per day without government intervention beyond the previously announced plan B measures.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the Omicron coronavirus variety has been detected in 89 countries, with the number of cases doubling every 1.5 to three days in places with community transmission.

According to the latest numbers, more than 89 percent of people aged 12 and up in the United Kingdom have received their first dose of vaccine, and more than 81 percent have received both doses. Booster shots, or the third dosage of a coronavirus vaccination, have been given to more than 47% of people.

Countries such as the United Kingdom, China, Germany, Russia, and the United States have been racing against time to roll out coronavirus vaccines in order to restore normalcy.
