The Philippine Medical Association (PMA) has stated that children between 5 to 11 years old should be vaccinated against coronavirus sickness (Covid-19).

The PMA issued a statement warning that Covid-19 has a direct effect on children and may put them at risk of developing multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C).

“While most cases are mild or asymptomatic,” the association noted in a statement, “some may develop more significant repercussions, such as Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children, and even death.”

The pandemic has harmed children’s growth, mental health, learning, and health-seeking behaviors, according to the report.

The organization stated that it fully supports the Department of Health’s (DOH) and the National Task Force against Covid-29’s (NTF) efforts to safeguard Filipino children against Covid-19 through vaccination.

The existing Covid-19 vaccinations for children aged 5 to 11 have undergone thorough testing by the US Food and Drug Administration, according to the report (FDA).

To now, the Pfizer vaccine is being used for pediatric vaccination because it is the only one that has gotten emergency use approval from the Philippine Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for children aged 5 to 11.

Pfizer’s children’s vaccine has a lower dose and concentration than the vaccines supplied to minors aged 12 to 17, who began receiving their shots in October 2021.

“They’ve been shown to be both safe and effective at preventing symptomatic Covid-19 and its consequences.” The provision of Covid-19 vaccinations will contribute to the reduction of illness load in this age range, according to the report.

The PMA recommended parents talk to their doctors about their concerns about vaccinations.

“The PMA continues to urge all members of the eligible population groups to use caution and only collect and spread information from reliable sources,” the group said in a statement.

Vaccination for children aged 5 to 11 years old was originally scheduled to begin on Friday last week but was postponed due to logistical issues with the arrival of a reformulated Pfizer vaccine for children.

A total of 15,564,305 children in this age group are expected to be vaccinated as part of the campaign.
