MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine government has received a boost in its vaccination and anti-coronavirus campaign thanks to a donation of 34 refrigerated trucks and four service vans worth USD1.5 million from the Korean government on Tuesday (approximately PHP77 million).

The latest funding would boost the Philippines’ National Immunization Program, particularly the government’s coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) immunization efforts, according to the Korean Embassy in Manila.

The trucks will be sent to various Department of Health regional offices via the Center for Health Development to assist in vaccine cold chain transportation.

“We’re thrilled to be working with the Department of Health to promote the Philippines’ Covid-19 vaccine campaign. We anticipate making a further contribution to the National Immunization Program with the donation of these cold-chain trucks and vans “During the handover ceremony at the Department of Health, Korean Ambassador Kim Inchul said.

To date, Korea’s total Covid-19 contribution to the Philippines has totaled over USD210 million (PHP10.6 billion), with a portion of that money going toward the purchase of 510,000 AstraZeneca vaccine doses, 970,000 masks, 167,000 hygiene kits, 1,200 personal protective equipment, 530,000 swab test kits, seven walk-through booths, two extraction equipment, six isolation beds, and rice to feed 365,000 Filipinos.

Budget support of almost USD200 million, on the other hand, was earmarked to help the government scale up its Covid-19 response.

“As a real partner and friend of the Philippines, Korea will continue to help the Philippines’ efforts to vaccinate its people, manage the Covid-19 outbreak, and achieve economic recovery,” according to the Embassy.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III and Vaccine Czar Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. were also present at the handover event.
