Duterte to ensure ‘free, fair, and transparent elections’: Palace

MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte has assured the public that the May 9, 2022 national and local elections will be free of fraud.

This comes after senators revealed Thursday the alleged “breach” in the system of Smartmatic Inc., the service provider for the country’s upcoming elections’ automated election software.

“President Duterte will do everything possible to ensure clean, fair, and honest elections,” acting Presidential Spokesperson and Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said during his “Ask Me Anything, Anywhere” segment on his Facebook page.

Andanar stated that Duterte has directed his Cabinet, as well as teachers who will serve as poll workers in the May 9 elections, to safeguard election integrity.

Senator Imelda Josefa “Imee” Marcos, chairwoman of the Joint Congressional Oversight Committee (JCOC) on the Automated Election System, stated that an unidentified Smartmatic employee permitted a hacker group to copy confidential election data.

Marcos learned of the security breach Thursday morning during the JCOC’s executive session with some Comelec officials.

Marcos, whose brother Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is running for the country’s top job, expressed concern about the “very serious” security breach, citing the “degree, depth, and breadth of data” that was released and made public.

Despite Marcos’ allegations, the Comelec maintained Thursday that there was no hacking of the automated election system.

Comelec spokesman James Jimenez expressed confidence that the allegations of hacking would have no effect on the election results.

The congressional investigation was launched in response to a January report by the local newspaper Manila Bulletin that Comelec’s servers had been hacked.

According to a report in the Manila Bulletin, a group of hackers downloaded more than 60 gigabytes (Gb) of data that could jeopardize the May 9 elections.

According to the report, the leaked confidential files include network diagrams, IP addresses, a list of all privileged users, domain administrator credentials, access to the ballot handling dashboard, and QR code captures of the bureau of canvassers with login and password.

Duterte directed the police and military in February to ensure that national elections are conducted in an orderly, clean, and peaceful manner.
