MANILA, Philippines – On Wednesday, a Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM) official urged men to take an active role in family planning in order to alleviate the burden on women.

“Undergoing a non-scalpel vasectomy (NSV) demonstrates your love and concern for your spouses and partners in a tangible way. That is the challenge we are issuing to Filipino males,” POPCOM Chairman Dr. Jeepy Perez told reporters.

NSV is more convenient than women’s bilateral tubal ligation (BTL) procedures, he explained.

During the pandemic’s peak, the POPCOM increased its efforts to distribute contraceptives to women via its regional offices.

It stated that the prolonged quarantine can result in sexual activity between couples, resulting in a population boom, which is also a concern for the government.

Perez stated that only 30% of Filipinas currently use pills for family planning.

“As the pandemic subsided and health restrictions were gradually eased, many women underwent bilateral tubal ligations” (BTLs). Filipino men can help their spouses and partners cope with family planning pressures by strongly considering vasectomies,” Perez added.

According to POPCOM data, the number of Filipino women engaged in family planning has increased to 8 million.
