Duterte counsels Marcos during a ‘productive’ meeting
MANILA โ During their recent meeting, President Rodrigo Duterte gave presidential aspirant Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. some advice.
Senator Christopher Lawrence Go confirmed the meeting between Duterte and Marcos on the sidelines of an event in Quezon City.
“Magnificent naman ang outcome ng meeting. At talagang ganado ‘yung Pangulo na magkuwento, medyo matagal-tagal nga ‘yon. I believe that approximately 80% of the discussion was more about si Presidente po ang nagsasalita (The meeting’s outcome was favorable. They had a lengthy meeting, during which the President spoke for the majority of the time. Around 80% of the discussion, I believe, is more of the President speaking),” Go stated in an interview.
Duterte met with Marcos in a “cordial and productive” meeting, acting Presidential Spokesperson and Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said in a statement.
Duterte, according to Andanar, also discussed with Marcos the current administration’s major accomplishments.
Go stated Duterte also discussed his experiences as President of the Philippines with Marcos, emphasizing his desire for his successor to continue his policies and programs.
“Nagbigay siya ng mga kaunting payo, mga ginawa niya para sa ating bayan ay sana po’y ipagpatuloy ng kung sino po ‘yong magiging susunod na Pangulo (He gave advice and shared what he had done for the country. And he expressed hope that the next president would continue the work he had begun),” he added.
Both Andanar and Go made no mention of the meeting’s date or location.
Go, on the other hand, hinted that the meeting may have played a role in the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan’s (PDP-Laban) endorsement of Marcos’ presidential bid.
Go stated that the decision to support Marcos’ candidacy is a “party decision” made following a series of discussions and consultations with members of the PDP-Laban.
“Perhaps ‘yun po ang naging isa sa naging dahilan, pero dumaan po ‘yon sa konsultasyon at proceso,” Go said.
In a resolution issued Monday, the PDP-Laban stated that the decision to endorse Marcos was reached following “careful and exhaustive” deliberations by its national executive committee.
Marcos, according to Duterte’s ruling party, is “the candidate whose vision of governance is most in line with the PDP-11-point Laban’s agenda.”
On Tuesday, Andanar stated that Duterte’s support for the PDP-decision Laban’s to support Marcos is “unclear.”
Duterte has made no official announcement regarding his preferred successor.
