CITY OF CAGAYAN DE ORO – Eleven families residing along the riverbanks in Barangay Bobontugan in Jasaan, Misamis Oriental, were given construction materials by various chapters of Rotary Club (RC) under District 3870 to assist them in rebuilding their homes after Typhoon Odette.

Engineer Almarco Brito, previous president of RC West of CDO and project leader, stated the district’s total donations amounted to PHP300,000, which was used to purchase raw materials for the construction of dwellings.

“We went to the area after the cyclone and did assessments. We observed a person who had suffered a stroke and was living in a tent, and we felt that simply providing relief products would not suffice; they needed to repair their shelters as well “In an interview on Saturday, he stated.

The RC Zone 1 Council of Presidents proposed the proposal first, but other chapters later joined up.

Five of the 11 target houses are virtually finished, according to Clifford Jose Roa, the current president of RC West.

“We budgeted PHP25,000 per house, and it’s not out of the question that we can help the typhoon survivors by restoring their homes and dignity,” he said.

Michie Valdon, a widow with eight children, one of whom was a disabled person, was one of the recipients.

Valdon claimed that she returned to Bobontugan to assist his father, and that when the storm hit, the Bobontugan river spilled, destroying their home.

“Their (Rotary Club) assistance came at a critical time since we couldn’t do it (rebuild their houses) on our alone,” she added in vernacular.

Meanwhile, town mayor Redentor Jardin announced that a PHP600 million mega dike project will be built in their community as part of the local government’s and the province of Misamis Oriental’s anti-flooding infrastructure.

“We already submitted the district engineer (of the province government) the estimated program specifics and budgeting, and hopefully it will be authorized this year,” he said.
