The USS Abraham Lincoln docks in the Philippines with Filipino sailors.

MANILA, Philippines โ€“ With the arrival of the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, the US Navy reaffirmed its commitment to continuing to build a “strong military and people-to-people alliance” with the Philippines.

Capt. Amy Bauernschmidt, commanding officer of CVN 72, stated that the USS Abraham Lincoln made its first deployment to the Philippines during the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in Pampanga, transporting nearly 45,000 people from Subic Bay Naval Station to the Port of Cebu.

Around 10% of its approximately 3,000 sailors are Filipino.

Chief Petty Officer Rommel Pasive stated that the mission afforded him the opportunity to visit his family and relax while touring the area’s attractions.

3rd Class Petty Officer Jessica Romero, 22, is looking forward to reuniting with her siblings and relatives following her move to the United States in 2018.

“I am committed to carrying out the ship’s mission as a proud representative of the Filipino people,” she said during a Thursday interview with a select group of journalists flown to the ship in the West Philippine Sea by a CMV-22 Osprey military aircraft.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Dan Michael Canta, who is in charge of the jets’ maintenance, said that despite their hectic schedules, Filipino employees find time to socialize and console one another.

“Parang Pilipinas lang din,” he explained.

According to Rear Admiral Jeffrey Anderson, commander of the carrier’s Strike Group 3, the US Navy’s “global deterrent presence” is aimed at strengthening international partnerships, ensuring freedom of navigation and access, and providing humanitarian aid and disaster relief to countries of destination.

The visit is also part of the Philippines and US’s close cooperation in conducting joint military exercises to maintain efficiency and sharpen command control skills while challenging participants to adapt to changing environments, Anderson added.

A series of military training exercises with the Armed Forces of the Philippines will take place during the CVN 72’s visit, which began on January 23 in San Diego, California.

The ship will remain in port “until further notice,” with the officers committed to “assisting, nurturing, and sustaining the strong relationship” with the Philippines. On Friday, it was in Manila Bay.

“These exercises demonstrate the Navy’s and Marine Corps’ cooperative military and people-to-people ties with our allies and partners in the Asia Pacific,” Anderson said, noting that the Philippines and the US have had strong cooperative military and people-to-people ties for 75 years.

“Our presence and engagements in the region demonstrate our commitment to the region as we work to safeguard our collective interests, strengthen our security, and protect our shared values,” he added.

In August of last year, the USS Charleston (LCS 18) made its maiden visit to the Philippines, the first by a commissioned US Navy warship since 2019.
