The Comelec prints 67.4 million ballots ahead of the April 25 deadline.
MANILA, Philippines โ The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said on Saturday that the printing of more than 67 million ballots for the May 9 national and local elections was completed.
The election commission announced that 67,442,616 ballots are ready weeks ahead of the deadline of April 25.
“The last 67.4 million official ballots for #NLE2022 were printed at approximately 10:28 a.m. today (Saturday), April 2,” the commission’s Twitter account, @COMELEC, said.
The National Capital Region ballots were the latest to be printed.
Following that, all ballots will go through a verification process.
On January 23, the National Printing Office in Quezon City began printing.
319,138 ballots have been quarantined, according to Commissioner George Garcia. As of Saturday, 178,990 of the total had been found to be defective.
“It could yet go up if we locate more from the quarantined people,” he said.
Smudges and ballots that are not correctly cut, among other things, are among the ballots that are rejected.
Garcia said in a statement that the faulty ballots would be reprinted.
Each ballot must be attached by a perforated line to a stub numbered consecutively, commencing with the number “1” in each city and municipality, according to the Omnibus Election Code. Each ballot must also include a detachable coupon with the same number as the stub at the bottom.
The name of the city or municipality in which the ballots are to be used, as well as the inclusive serial numbers of the ballots included therein, must be printed on the cover of each pad of ballots.
The official ballots will be bound in individual pads of 50 or 100 ballots, depending on the number of ballots needed.
The Comelec should distribute official ballots and election returns to each city and municipality at a rate of one and one-fifth ballots for every voter registered in each polling site, and one set of election returns for each polling station.
“The provincial, city or municipal treasurer shall keep a record of the quantity and serial numbers of official ballots and election returns furnished to the various provinces, cities, municipalities, and polling places, as the case may be, legible copies of which record shall be furnished to the duly authorized provincial, city, or municipal representatives of the ruling party and the dominant opposition party, as well as the Commission, immediately following the distribution.”
