MANILA – Choo Kyongho, the Acting Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea, congratulated Sara Duterte on her presumed victory as the Philippines’ 15th Vice President in the May 9 elections.

Choo wrote to Duterte on Monday, expressing his confidence that the Philippines will “continue on its road of peace and development” under his leadership.

He highlighted that the Philippines has “particularly special relevance” to Korea as a result of the latter’s participation in the Korean War in the 1950s, as well as being a “long-standing partner with the longest history of diplomatic connections” among ASEAN nations (Asean).

Choo stated, “I look forward to the strong cooperation between the two new governments to further elevate Korea-Philippine relations.”

Duterte said in a statement that her inauguration as vice president of the Philippines will take place on June 19 in Davao City.

She explained that the inauguration was moved up from the regular June 30 date to allow her to attend the inauguration of presumptive president Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

President Yoon Suk Yeol of Korea had earlier thanked Marcos and referred to the Philippines as an “important partner” in Korea-ASEAN relations.
