To properly cover terrain, multi-role vessels are required: PCG’s leader

MANILA – Admiral Artemio Abu, the Philippine Coast Guard Commandant, wants 15 more 97-meter multi-role response vessels (MRRVs) like the freshly commissioned BRP Teresa Magbanua (MRRV-9701) to fully cover the country’s maritime territories if given the chance.

When asked by the Philippine News Agency on Thursday how many 97-meter long MRRVs would be ideal for the PCG, he said this.

“If kaya bigyan kada district ng mas malaking barko, for starters, we have 15 Coast Guard regional offices, one malaking barko, perfect na yan. (If each district is given a similarly-sized ship, the Coast Guard has 15 regional offices to begin with, we will have full coverage of our archipelagic nation), “Abu remarked.

“The more, the better,” said PCG’s president.

The PCG officially commissioned their first MRRV, the BRP Teresa Magbanua, on May 6. It’s now on its way to Makassar, Indonesia, where it’ll join three other Coast Guard vessels for the Regional Maritime Pollution Exercise (MARPOLEX), which runs from May 22 to 29.

The second MRRV, BRP Melchora Aquino, the sister ship of BRP Teresa Magbanua, is slated to arrive in the first week of June, according to Abu.

He noted that once fully operational and deployed in the West Philippine Sea, these ships will help the PCG’s endurance and patrol capabilities, which were previously limited to tiny vessels.

“Siyempre, paglaki ng barko natin pagtaas ng kakayahan [din],” the PCG chairman explained.

MRRVs in the Teresa Magbanua class have a length of 97 meters, a top speed of 24 knots, and a complement of 67 officers and crew members.

Two 6600 kW diesel engines are also installed on the ship. Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd in Shimonoseki built these MRRVs based on the Kunigami class design.

The PCG’s main responsibilities include enforcing all applicable laws in Philippine waters, conducting maritime security operations, protecting life and property at sea, and safeguarding the maritime environment and resources.
