DFA calls Chinese official over research vessel ‘harassment’
The Philippine government summoned a senior Chinese Embassy official over the Chinese Coast Guard’s (CCG) “harassment” of a Taiwanese vessel carrying Filipino scientists in the South China Sea.
Tuesday, DFA said the officer was summoned on April 13.
“The Department called a senior official of the Chinese Embassy in Manila to protest CCG harassment on RV Legend,” it said in a subsequent statement.
Foreign coast guard vessels near the MSR “are unambiguous violations” of Philippine maritime jurisdiction, the DFA stated.
It didn’t disclose details but stated the effort was led by UP-NIGS.
AMTI stated RV Legend was shadowed by CCG vessel 5203 while conducting research 60 nautical miles northwest of Luzon on March 24.
Taipei dispatched Coast Guard 5001 from Taiwan-occupied Pratas Island on March 25.
Taiwan’s 5001 kept the Chinese warship away from RV Legend for two days, coming within 1,000 meters of each other.
Two CCG vessels also challenged marine research and hydrocarbon development in the Philippines’ EEZ in the South China Sea.
The DFA confirmed the “presence of foreign coast guard vessels” around Reed Bank and the Philippine-approved Service Contracts No. 75 and 72, conducting actions inconsistent with an innocent passage.
The DFA is reviewing detailed reports of these activities to take diplomatic action.
“Only the Philippine Coast Guard has enforcement jurisdiction over these waters, according to State. Foreign warships following tracks that are not continuous nor expeditious are against the Philippines’ interests “reported
The agency promised to continue defending Philippine interests, national security, and territorial integrity.
“The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs takes diplomatic measures for infringement of Philippine sovereignty,” it said. (
