Adapting to digital technology helps countries compete: Marcos.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. stated on Wednesday that digital transformation would enable all nations to keep up with a changing globe (Manila time).

Marcos complained that many countries still “barely understand” how to use and benefit from digital technologies in his statement at the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York City.

Marcos advocated for the quick acceptance of technological advancements so that all nations could stay up.

“Modern technology is rapidly changing how people live and experience the world. We still have little understanding of how and where these changes are going. Many of our current issues could be solved by the impending proliferation of these new technologies, but they also have the potential to upset our political and social systems. Our governance frameworks must evolve, “added he.

“The world is prepared for change. It is up to us as the national leaders to influence and shape that shift, “Marcos threw in.

This comes as Marcos also highlighted his displeasure with the existence of “inequalities and inequities” between wealthy and developing countries, which were noticeable during the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

He claimed that the transition to a digital environment could assist both developed and developing countries, hoping to quickly recover from the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Inequalities and injustices inside and across countries continue to persist, and they continue to demand urgent action,” he added. “We remain tormented by an unresolved problem.” “To speed up growth, we must employ public and private resources to promote more trade, investment, and technological transfers. Knowledge and intellectual advancements must be freely shared to enable those falling behind to catch up.”

Marcos stated that the Philippines is investing in digitalization to assist the country recover from the pandemic while recognizing the “inalienable right” of all nations to “peaceful uses of all existing and emerging technologies.”

He claimed that utilizing technological advancements will increase economic activity.

According to Marcos, “The Philippines is laying the governance framework that will allow us to harness the power of renewable energy, develop the capacity to utilize the life sciences, such as medicine and virology, pursue digital solutions towards a more modern economy, and expand our presence in space.”

“At the same time, we require fresh frameworks to control quick advancements in various fields. We must first establish the standards of appropriate conduct for cyberspace and outer space, as well as create legal frameworks that will stop the use of artificial intelligence for military purposes, “Added he.

Marcos urged the UN member states to include the right use of modern technologies in their development agenda, stating that sustainability necessitates the creation of policies that “go beyond the standard criteria.”

“The spread of cutting-edge technology throughout the economy is encouraging, but costs might be involved. The potential displacement of human labor due to automation advancements must be considered in our growth plan. Our economic systems need to be ready for this. We should begin constructing the essential supports for the impacted sectors, “added said.

He declared that “knowledge and research remain the keys to unlocking the promise of our dynamic future.”

“Important investments” include fostering young people’s intellectual curiosity, developing their abilities, and safeguarding their intellectual property, according to Marcos.

In a previous statement, Marcos stated that his government would work with the private sector to streamline and improve public transactions as a player in the “new digital world.”
