Heed business organizations’ calls to eliminate POGOs: Solon
Rep. Bienvenido Abante Jr. of Manila City’s 6th District asked lawmakers and the Executive Department on Friday to pay attention to the “increasing demand” from various sectors to outlaw and gradually phase out Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) in the nation due to their negative consequences.
The Foundation for Economic Freedom, Makati Business Club, and the Management Association of the Philippines issued a joint statement on Tuesday stating that they fully support “the Department of Finance’s push to phase out all POGO operations” as the social and repetitional costs of government sponsorship of activities that are widely regarded as unethical outweigh any financial advantages.
An outright ban on POGOs, according to the three organizations, “would only result in temporary economic pressures, as opposed to the persistent socio-economic implications and severe disruption if we do not act now.”
The House of Representatives and Senate public hearings on the POGO problem, according to Abante, “apparently opened the eyes of our business leaders to the pros and cons of the POGO industry.”
“This joint statement makes it apparent that Big Business believes the drawbacks of the POGO industry make it a burden – not an asset – in our country’s efforts to attract investments, to strengthen faith in the Philippine banking system, and to promote Philippine-China commercial relations,” he said.
House Bill 5082, also known as the Anti-POGO Act of 2022, was written by the legislator, an opponent of gaming. The measure, which was submitted on September 21, aims to outlaw and restrict POGO operations throughout the nation.
In the explanation of the policy, it is said that “the continuous functioning of POGOs is a public exhibition and confession of frustration over, and failure to adequately handle, our deplorable national economic status.”
A quotation from the explanatory note stated, “To say that we need the funds generated from POGOs (and PAGCOR for that matter) is to confess the powerlessness of the national leadership and succumb in bended knees to the domination of the defenseless enemy of society called gambling.”
