Samal trains 45 lifeguards to increase visitor safety.

The Samal Island Beach Resorts Association (SIBRA) provided a 10-day training for 45 lifeguards in this area to increase the ability of local resorts to ensure the safety of visitors.

The program, which began on Tuesday at the Kaputian Beach Park in cooperation with the City Investment and Tourism Office and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), aims to give participants skills in both lifeguarding and water search and rescue.

Ruby Uy, president of SIBRA, emphasized in an interview the importance of licensed lifeguards in Samal’s strategic tourism development while safeguarding the security of visitors to local attractions.

Each of the island’s 138 officially recognized beach resorts, according to Uy, ought to be staffed by qualified lifeguards.

“They must have their own lifeguard, as per our requirements. There may be a different schedule so they may send their representative for training as well, “She spoke.

The recruits will go through two rounds of training, including lifeguard training (five days) and water search and rescue training (five days), according to IGACOS Coast Guard station commander Ensign Vasit Venturillo (five days).

Given the characteristics we use, particularly in the skill set, this is on par with the international standard, according to Venturillo.

Venturillo noted that throughout the training period, the Coast Guard deployed 21 troops, seven trainers, and their floating equipment.

The deputy commander of PCG District Southeastern Mindanao, Capt. Gary Dale Gimotea, recommended that resorts always have lifeguards on duty who are trained in water search and rescue.

In order to eventually undertake rescue in unfortunate events, he said, the resort needs to be staffed with trained personnel.

Aracelli Ayuste, vice president of SIBRA, concurred in the meanwhile, stating that lifeguards must be hired even if there haven’t been any past drowning incidents.

“We won’t hold off after an incident to performing the training. We need to complete this training immediately in order to save lives, and we are prepared to act in any situation “She spoke.

Jemarlyn Oyong, 35, one of the learners, stated that the training was crucial to her as she runs a resort in Barangay Balet in the Babak District.

She said, “Not only is it necessary, but I also want to help save lives.”

One of the two female trainees, Oyong, claimed she was there to show everyone that she could become a trained lifeguard.
