According to Senator Grace Poe, the privatization of the Metro Rail Transit (MRT-3) would increase its operational effectiveness.

Poe mentioned the privately run, more effective MRT train systems in Japan, as well as the Light Rail Transit.

“I concur that privatizing the MRT operations is a good idea. Political interference has increased issues and inefficiencies with the MRT operations, as we have seen in the past, Poe said in a statement.

If the government chooses to press for its privatization, Poe, the Senate Committee on Public Services’ chair, said concessions should be open and thoroughly examined.

Poe noted that the government should also have “some control” in determining the fare matrix in order to prevent prohibitive and unfair price increases. He added that the contract should be “fairly awarded through public bidding, to a competent and financially viable company, with a track record of providing efficient service and knowledge in train and public transport operations.”

The well-being, comfort, and safety of the riding public should come first, she continued.

The MRT-3 and other rail services in the nation are “not for sale,” according to the Department of Transportation’s clarification on Wednesday, although its operations and maintenance may be given to competent private operators.

Railway services in the National Capital Region, such as the LRT-1, LRT-2, and the MRT-3, will continue to receive government subsidies, according to Secretary Jaime Bautista, in order to keep “fare levels affordable.”
