Muslims express alarm at an increase in Islamophobic incidents.

At least 662 Islamophobic offenses have been reported to German authorities in 2021.

More than 46 mosques were attacked, and there were at least 17 injuries as a result of anti-Muslim violence.

Attacks on Muslims and mosques have increased since the coronavirus outbreak, according to Suleyman Demir, project director of the anti-discrimination organization Inssan, and the situation is grave because Germany is having financial problems.

Demir told Anadolu Agency that “the figures have clearly grown, especially for women who wear a headscarf.”

He added: “We are also increasingly hearing from our community that women who wear the hijab and niqab are subject to far more physical attacks, including spitting, and that this has actually grown dramatically in recent years.

In the first half of 2022, at least seven people were injured in 152 Islamophobic incidents, according to German officials.

Due to the fact that many attacks go undetected, though, it may not be the complete picture.

Many Muslims refrain from reporting events to the police because they believe their accusations won’t be taken seriously, according to Demir, who is in charge of the “Network against discrimination and Islamophobia” initiative at Inssan.

“Sometimes they don’t feel heard or noticed, which leads them to question the need to report something. There won’t be any repercussions,” declared Demir.

To combat crimes involving Islamophobia, he asked cops to receive improved sensitivity training.

“Police officers lack the necessary training. He added that many instances of Islamophobia are not adequately recorded by police in crime statistics. “For instance, they are trained on transphobia or anti-Semitism, but they are not trained on confronting anti-Muslim crimes,” he said.

Demir also cautioned that far-right organizations are attempting to use the current energy and economic challenges to incite fear and hatred toward Muslims and other minorities.

“It is simple to blame minorities for political or economic issues, i.e., as scapegoats, and the far-right groups naturally employ this tactic to claim that these minorities are to blame for the significant economic crises. As a result, I perceive a link between the economic condition and the rise of right-wing extremism, he said.

Demir argued that in order to strengthen democracy and thwart the development of the far-right, Muslims and other minorities must become more politically engaged.

There are between 180 and 200 different nationalities represented here, so he predicted that Muslims, particularly those who were born in the country, would also feel at home. They “will participate in democratic decision-making and, of course, decide Germany’s future.”

With a population of more than 84 million, Germany has the second-largest Muslim community in Western Europe, behind France.

Three million of the country’s roughly 5.5 million Muslims are of Turkish descent.
