Cubao archbishop advises followers to “refresh, connect, and reset.”
Cubao Archbishop Ness Ongtioco asked the Catholic faithful to renew their faith by returning to church on Wednesday as the number of cases of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) continues to decline.
At the conclusion of the nine-day Novena to Nuestra Senora de la Salud (Our Lady of Health) at the San Nicolas Catholic Church in Quezon City, Ongtioco urged the Filipinos to attend church and engage in communal activities as a way of recharging.
Ongtioco echoed the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) earlier call for the faithful to return to Church because conditions have generally improved and the restriction has been loosened by saying, “We need to replenish our faith.”
“We are urged to visit Church once more in order to rediscover what it is to live as a community—that is, in communion with one another, as active participants in God’s plan for salvation, and as people on a mission. Let’s reconnect, reboot, and rejuvenate ourselves, Ongtioco said.
According to him, practicing Catholics ought to partake in sacraments in person.
The archbishop also urged people who regularly watch live streaming of mass services to stop doing so and instead join other devout people in prayer and worship inside the church.
Ongtioco also emphasized the crucial part that Nuestra Senora de la Salud, the Blessed Virgin Mary’s alternative name, played in preventing the spread of Covid-19 in the Philippines and in the recovery of those Filipinos who had suffered the illness.
After being kept out of public view for 72 years, the Catholic Church brought back devotion to the miraculous image of Nuestra Senora de la Salud in 2016.
The artwork was brought to the Philippines by the Spaniards in 1634.
