DOH surpasses NCR’s 100% newborn immunization goal

Over 137,701 infants have been immunized by the Department of Health (DOH) against vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) in the National Capital Region through the Metro Manila Center for Health Development (NCR).

The DOH noted in a statement on Tuesday that the accomplishment is a part of its “Vax-Baby-Vax” campaign, a 10-day catch-up vaccination program that was initiated on November 7.

The organization seeks to safeguard newborns in the NCR between the ages of 0 and 12 months from VPDs such as diphtheria, hepatitis B, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, and hepatitis C. (HPV).

After immunizing 701 more children, the region’s overall objective of 137,000 infants was surpassed, raising the coverage rate to 100.48 percent.

The top three cities with the highest coverage rates are Manila (28,073 immunized infants, or 130% of their target population), Quezon City (23,732 immunized infants, or 129%), and Paranaque City (10,803 immunized infants, or 122%).

The DOH officer in charge, Maria Rosario Vergeire, said, “We are quite happy about this achievement. Not because we exceeded our objective, but because doing so signifies that we were successful in safeguarding our children against crippling but easily preventable diseases.

Along with defending children against VPDs, the program attempts to reach susceptible infants who missed their scheduled immunizations because of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

According to the DOH’s most recent information on immunization coverage, 1.4 million Filipino infants who were born during the Covid-19 pandemic have not yet received any vaccinations.

Vergeire claimed that the DOH is aware of how the pandemic’s mobility restrictions and other reasons, such as natural catastrophes, prevented parents from completing their infants’ normal immunizations.

“Ating mga anak hindi pa huli ang lahat para pagbakunahan. It’s still not too late to get your kids immunized. Huwag na po nating hintayin kung magkasakit sila at magsisi tayo, ngayon pa lang ay ibigay na natin sa kanila ang proteksyon na kailangan nila upang mabigyan natin sila ng maluso Give them the protection they need now so they can grow up healthy; let’s not wait for them to get sick first and then regret it.

She praised the local governments for the crucial part they played in the immunization campaign’s success.

“This accomplishment demonstrates unequivocally that, when working together, we can meet and even exceed our predetermined goals. She remarked, “We did it in Metro Manila, we can do it in other areas. Nagawa natin ito sa Metro Manila, gagawin rin natin ito sa ibang mga rehiyon.”
