Warning for unpaid Saudi OFWs: Refuse offers of assistance

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has advised Filipinos whose Saudi Arabian employers have not paid them their wages to avoid dealing with anyone who offers to mediate on their behalf, even someone from the agency itself.

In a news conference on Monday, DMW Secretary Susan Ople stated that, in addition to herself, Undersecretary Hans Leo Cacdac is the only other person permitted to deal with claims.

“We want to get in touch with all the claimants and their families to let them know that, first of all, there are no intermediaries here” (there are no middlemen here). The welfare of our affected displaced OFWs (overseas Filipino workers) is at the center of this transaction, which is solely between governments, according to Ople.

OFW claimants have informed the DMW that they have been solicited by people who have offered assistance and mediation.

Following the bilateral discussions on Friday in Bangkok, Thailand, between President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Ople stated that there are still no specifics on how the money will be made.

The prince promised that 10,000 OFWs who were displaced after numerous Riyadh-based construction enterprises filed for bankruptcy in 2015 and 2016 would get payment from the Saudi government for their lost wages.

“So if someone approaches you and says that this is the way to get your wages immediately, or if someone asks for your contact information and says that they will inform you of developments, that is not true,” Ople said.

For the unpaid wages of OFWs working for Saudi Oger Ltd., Mohammad Al Mojil Group, and other construction companies, the prince pledged around 2 billion riyals.

According to data, there are 3,454 and 8,829 claims from Mohammad Al Mojil and Saudi Oger, respectively.

According to Ople, the DMW has no tolerance for personnel who engage in corruption or other types of fraud.

“Please take a screenshot of any interactions with claimants or their families in which someone poses as a member of the DMW staff or offers aid in getting claims before reporting them to us. We won’t stand for it. The cybercrime authorities will receive a report about this, Ople said.

If a scammer is actually employed by DMW, their actions amount to “the worst form” of corruption, and they risk being fired from their position, Ople added.
